Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink

Nor Slumber nor a roof against the rain;

Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink

And raise and sink and raise and sink again;

Love cannot fill the thickened lung with breathe,

Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;

Yet many a man is making friends with death

Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.

It well may be that in a difficult hour,

Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,

Or nagged by want past resolution’s power,

I might be driven to sell your love for peace,

Or trade the memory of this night for food.

這是一首典型的十四行詩，有著abab型的押韻。英語文學裏的十四行詩，“so”，一般都是描寫愛情的，這首也不例外。So XXX 描寫了作者自己對待愛情的觀點。前半段作者表明愛情並不是一個必需品，但人還是甘之如飴的追求愛情。哪怕它什麽都不能做，男人也願意為了愛情去和死亡做朋友。作者的語氣也帶著不解和一點鄙視。而從第八句開始，作者從第三人稱視角換成了第一人稱，表示那是她自己的感受。後半段就是作者自己的淪陷。在體驗過愛情後，作者也和那些人一樣，她也終於理解為什麽人們把愛情視如珍寶，因為換做她自己，她也不願意失去愛情。
