Finally, after many trials, Ulysses arrived at Ithaca. No one recognized him because the goddess Athena had changed his clothes and face. They all believed him to be a beggar.
Ulysses went to the house of Eumaeus, the faithful shepherd, but suddenly wild dogs attacked him. With great difficulty Eumaeus drove back the dogs with stones and saved Ulysses. Eumaeus quickly led him into the cottage and gave him food and wine.
Yet Eumaeus answered, \"Master was kind and always helped beggars; but he is no longer at home. We waited twenty years for our Master. His wife and son Telemachus believe that he will return to their home.\"
Then Ulysses said, \"Are Telemachus and the queen in the kingdom\"
Eumaeus answered, \"Telemachus left Ithaca; He decided that he would seek for his father. Penelope waits for Ulysses. She waved every day in the kingdom. If she finishes this, the spouse will be forced to accept another. And so she waved it in the middle of the day; at night she unwaved the woven shawl.”
\"Every day the suitors come here and consume my master\'s animals, grain, and wine, but they give me no money. Penelope is already terrified, because the suitors say that one of them will soon marry her.”
