In locō sēcrētō juvenēs nāvem cēlāvērunt.
Orestēs, verbīs sorōris permōtus, respondit, “Prīmō necesse est mē capere parvam statum Diānae prope āram; sine statuā nōn poterimus redīre in Graeciam!”
英文:
The Greeks believed the minds of the gods were changed when Iphigenia was sacrificed. In a short time, therefore, they sailed to the shores of Troy. For ten years, they fought with the Trojans.
At last, Troy was conquered and the victorious Greeks returned home.
They punished Agamemnon, who tried to escape the divine command, with great cruelty. The miserable king was killed by his wife, because Clytemnestra believed that he was the cause of Iphigenia’s death. Then Orestes, their son, was forced to kill his mother by the laws of the Fates. Due to this crime, he was insane for a long time.
Finally, the priests told him, “In the land of Taurus is a small statue of Diana. Sail to that land. Seize this statue; bring it to the temple of Apollo. If you do this, you will regain your sanity.”
The land of Taurus was far away. Orestes did not know that his sister Iphigenia lived a long time with Diana.
Orestes sailed with his friend; finally, after many months, they came to the port of this land. In a secret place the young men hide the ship. However the two strangers, captured by the shepherds, were led to Iphigenia. By the cruel laws of the land, all the foreigners were to be sacrificed to the gods.
Immediately Iphigenia prepared to sacrifice the foreigners to the priests. Orestes and his friend, having been tied up by chains, are led to the temple. When the young men stood near the temple, Iphigenia recognized her brother, Orestes.
“Are you not Orestes, my brother” She questioned. “I am your sister, Iphigenia, saved by Diana. There are many dangers in the land of Taurus. Let’s flee without delay!”
Orestes, moved by the words of his sister, answered, “First, it is necessary for me to seize the small statue of Diana near the temple; without the statue we will not be able to return to Greece!”
He seized this statue, and Orestes fled with his sister and friend to the ship. Orestes was no longer insane.
In twenty seconds they sailed from the port of Taurus; in a short time they reached Greece. There they were welcomed with great joy by the astonished people.
